- Okay, in the long-ago days of yesteryear I did a lot of programming but my only recent experience has been Pi and Arduino so I essentially skipped the whole Linux era. Yes I Googled and hacked around when I needed to but never came close to feeling comfortable that I understood what I was doing, so I bought this book and committed myself that I would move from Beginner Noob to Junior Noob and I'm happy I did.
What I love about this book is the fact the title says it all - this covers the essentials and at the right pace and depth. For instance it doesn't cover every command line program you will use, but he covers the 20% that you will use 80% of the time and shows you how to find information on the others. The command line is everything so understanding the programs, editors, and scripting is key and this book will leave you feeling like a pro. His examples are carefully crafted to help you understand what the possibilities are by using various options and in combination with other commands. I thought Bash scripts were created by Gods before I was able to whip up some of my own after reading Chapter 12.
Overall if you have a similar background...some familiarity with any O/S command line, some programming experience, and/or have a little hacking around on Linux under your belt this book will get you to the next level. - There will always be a small set of people who insist you can only learn by doing it yourself. Others will say guide books are a waste because "everything is on the Internet." This review is for everyone else those who haven't made up their mind in advance.
This is an excellent tutorial. My barely computer-literate parent could follow it (and did). It is written in plain English and reads easier than some novels. It doesn't ramble on. It doesn't cut corners. This is baby bear's book - just right. It will work for any Linux distribution. Also, this book won't be outdated in a year like more software books, because it specifically avoids how to run software and focuses on how to use any OS built on Linux architecture. That means while programs may change or get new versions, and while you may update to a new or different distro, the information in the book will still apply.
Finally, a suggestion if you've been thinking about trying Linux but aren't ready to install a whole new operating system on your computer, go buy a single issue of Linux pro mag, Linux format mag, or another Linux specific mag. They come with DVDs that can run linux on your computer without affecting your installed OS. It's a nice way to try it out for those of us who dip our toes in the water rather than cannonball in without testing it out. - I did use this and UrbanPenguin materials to pass my test. This book was detailed enough that I may have felt comfortable enough to use this alone, however the author words material in such a way that i wondered if it was just added as filler or he was over preparing me. Nonetheless, I did pass the test on the first try. All objectives were covered.
- The first several chapters give to the history of UNIX, after that you begin to get into the Linux Essentials as the title suggests. I bought the book as a required text for a class, but find it very useful.
If you are new to UNIX/Linux this will give you great details, it is easy to read and easy to follow the examples. After reading the book I am comfortable working with Linux now both using the GUI and the command line. - I rented the book from school, but bought the version for portability. I found it to be a helpful and fairly easy to follow text. I'd recommend it for people new to Linux or those who need a refresher course. It is a valuable reference tool.

- Read book and passed exam. Having been using Linux for a number of years, only took me about a week to read through the book. Content is well organized with helpful notes and written to where anyone should be able to understand.
