• Michael D. Shankle edits an excellent text and reference for health care providers interested in improving care delivery at any level. This work is thoroughly researched and well formatted to explain why LGBT health care disparities exist and how to overcome them. An LBGT cultural competency framework fully describes the stages of attaining cultural competency. Specific health issues are explored and impediments to research are highlighted. Despite the evolution in health care delivery systems, progress in improving healthcare delivery to LGBT people remains lagging. This book was published in 2006 and remains relevant. I would encourage any nursing or medical education institution to require this text. Our ethical codes require attention to all individuals and this book can lead the way to improved human interactions as well as superior care delivery for all.
