"Mr. Metivier' s enthusiasm for his subject is obvious. But, and this is a very big BUT, if he wishes converts to his method, he badly needs a good editor. This book was not ready for publication, and it looked to this reader to be of the "first draft- last draft" variety. This very brief book, which does have some helpful content, is riddled with spelling and grammar errors. For example, the author makes much of the memorization of the sequence of a deck of cards. Several times the printer used "suite" for a "suit" of cards, and then switched to the correct spelling later. Grammar errors appear with jarring frequency.
I like the ideas contained in the book, if not the implementation, which demonstrates that we all have minds that work differently."

- I used this book to learn more Arrernte vocabulary - even though it's aimed at people learning German. Arrernte is Australian Aboriginal language that is TOTALLY unlike any European language, so I would argue that if the method is going to fail, then it will fail with a language like Arrernte. I should also add that I read this book in conjunction with doing the author's online course, as I find I learn by reading, thinking and doing much easier than watching or listening to lectures, greatly benefited from the book.
First up, it should be stated that this technique is not for lazy people or those who want a ‘quick fix’. It involves creating complex mental imagery and higher-level cognitive processing, which is in fact why you’re able to recall the words and their meanings as you walk through your mental journey.
The system can be summarised in these steps
• Imagine a place that starts with a letter of the alphabet in the language you’re learning (places like shopping centres and university campuses or highways worked best for me) – this is the ‘palace’
• Identify 10 words starting with this letter that you wish to remember
• Within your place (let’s use a the Stuart Highway, going north, from Port Augusta in South Australia), identify 10 ‘stations’ or locations along the way – take great care NOT to get into a dead end, though.
• Create mnemonic images (the more outrageous the better) to help you recall your words (i.e. to remember the word for Victoria Wattle in Arrernte –arlepe (pronounced ‘a leper’) I imagined lots of lepers running naked through this prickly wattle!)
• Place each image at a location within the palace
• Rinse and repeat for each letter of the alphabet in your target language.
I followed and actually DID what the author suggested, using his downloadable sample worksheets – and in 10 days was able to remember an additional 200 words in a language that is considered one of the most difficult for English speakers to learn. I can't tell you how thrilled I am with this!
The ONLY secret to being able to use this system is that you actually need to do the work to implement it.
I won't lie it's a lot of work to set up the memory palaces in the beginning – you will need to allow yourself between 1-5 hours to do this. Then you need to create at least 10 stations in each palace, then add your words and create your images. In reading a number of the negative reviews here, I get the impression that they were commenting on Metivier’s writing style rather than any attempt to actually implement the system – so it’s grossly unfair to critique a system when you haven’t even tried to use it.
The complexity of the Magnetic Memory Palace System can be daunting initially, so I accept some people won’t have the patience to implement, however for those who do, I suspect that you will AMAZE yourself with what your mind is capable of learning. - Mr. Metivier' s enthusiasm for his subject is obvious. What I don't like about this book is this concept of the memory palace. The whole idea is to construct a memory palace from places you've seen or been to. I prefer a book where all the systems have been created and structured. Harry Lorayne's The Memory Book satisfies that criteria. This book overs a lot of distinct chapter topics to explore. What I look for in any memory improvement book is efficiency in learning the system and working it. You can change parts of The memory book to suit your own quirks. For best benefits read all the chapters and do all the exercises. I thought this book on memorizing German to be very inefficient.
- There is the most detailed and thorough book on memory palaces that I
have read. It goes into great depth outlining how to use memory palaces
to memorize German vocabulary. I've been at an impasse with gaining
proficiency with German, mainly because I could not remember vocabulary.
I've tried many different ways to memorize vocabulary with little luck.
The book also has a couple good appendices with resources for memory and
language learning.
The book gives a method for remembering language vocabulary. You have to
implement these methods to get anything out of the book. This is not the
mnemonic method. This uses memory palaces which has the advantage of
engaging your spatial memory.
I think this is a great book especially for the price. Also the author
is very accessible and is willing to answer questions and take suggestions. - As someone looking to motivate myself to learn more German, I took a chance on this book despite some of the people saying it doesn't help them. I don't get it.
Over the years that I've tinkered around with my German, I've found some books more useful than others, but this book on actually memorizing German words is so powerful, the ideas should be included in every book on language learning.
I knew this only three chapters into the book. And now, after using the ideas for a few weeks, the method has proven itself beyond a shadow of a doubt. I can now finally actually use the grammar principles I've studied so long and hard. Also, you can also get a newsletter subscription using an email in the book and some worksheets that really helped me.
To those complaining that this approach doesn't work, I don't believe you've really tried it. To those who are serious about getting good at German, just trust me and give it a try. Because, let's be honest, German is an amazing language, and the worst that can happen is that you'll spend a bit of time learning the most powerful learning method I've ever seen.
