Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health Ann Aschengrau George R Seage 9781284128352 Books Reviews

  • Very well written book with the exception of a couple of things
    1. the chapters on confounding and bias were a bit confusing
    2. many of the examples that compared two different scenarios contained data that were essentially identical in terms of the differences. It's a bit hard to explain, but when you read it you'll understand. It's very confusing as a result to determine the differences between two different scenarios.

Aside from clear writing overall, I also really liked the fact that there was an entire chapter dedicated to the answers for all the problems in the book.
  • Required course material. I like that the electronic version has a search feature so that you can quickly move to the section you want to look at. I can also view it on any device- phone, laptop, or tablet.
  • Not going to read a whole other text for comparison, but this one seems pretty good. Inclusive without being super boring.
  • This textbook is definitely not the most useful resource for my Epidemiology course, I often find myself googling for more information because it is poorly organized in the book.
  • required textbook for my nursing class, it's a textbook, it was a lot of reading! good case studies tho!
  • This is a great text for anyone studying epidemiology.

Each chapter on the various aspects of Epi (ie, Confounding, Effect Modification, Random Error, Bias, Causation, etc) is readable, relatively short chapters (no more then 20 pages) and very clearly explains the necessary information. Each chapter then has a concise (less then one page) summary, perfect for test studying or board review. In addition, each chapter has test questions with answers posted at the back of the book. This book even explains the underlying mathmetical principles better then most statistic texts I've used.

While you could probably get through Epidemialogy just reading the lecture notes, this book will guarantee you understand it (with out spending too much time) and get a 4.0.
  • excellent review of epidemiology and related concepts! My wife was doing this course and I read a lot of texts but this one was very easy road and i understood a lot more. Highly recommend for advanced or beginner
  • I took an epidemiology course along with a bio-statistics course. I honestly ussed the biostat book for all my epidemiology assignments, its pretty much the same concepts. The copy i received had water damage, but there was no pages missing so when i did use the book i was able to get what i needed.
