Dark, earthy, and immensely powerful, the Black Goddess has been a key force in world history, manifesting in images as diverse as the Indian goddess Kali and the Black Madonnas of medieval Europe. She embodies the energy of chaos and creativity, creation and destruction, death and rebirth. Images of Her, however, have been conspicuously missing in the Western world for centuries—until now, when awareness of the Goddess is re-arising in many spheres, from the women's movement to traditional religion, from the new discoveries of quantum physics to the dreams of ordinary men and women. Why now particularly? The answer provided by Marion Woodman and Elinor Dickson is bold and thrilling the reemergence of the Divine Feminine in our time indicates our readiness to move to an entirely new level of consciousness. The reemerging Goddess calls for a shattering of rigid categories, a willingness to hold opposition. She calls us to marry reason and order to creativity, and to embrace the chaos that can ultimately lead to wisdom and transformation on personal and global levels.

Dancing in the Flames The Dark Goddess in the Transformation of Consciousness Marion Woodman Elinor Dickson Books Reviews

  • I won't pretend to understand jungian theory on anything but a visceral level. However, this book resonated for me, somewhere deep, as someone who is trying to care, in whatever way I can, for a mother who was not well-equipped, thanks to her own childhood, for the job while at the same time trying to be a better mother to my son. I thought I was doing okay, but I kept having these nightmares of trying to crawl through rubble and lava - upheaval and destruction - looking for my child, for my family, knowing that my home was gone.

    Like, every other night.

So, a friend of mine recommended this book. I need to read it again, because I am not sure I understood a word of it, but I loved it. I have come to see these dreams as images of creativity, as well as destruction, the searching as productive, the fire as something good. In particular, the discussions of perfectionism felt relevant, especially as they pertained to primal bonds.

Not all of it worked for me. Some seemed like magic-speak, even hooey, but maybe we are magic. Or are genetically disposed to believe in magic. I hope to understand better on re-reading.
  • I bought this book as part of my research on the Black Madonna. I read an article interviewing Marion Woodman and she described the Black Madonna as an emanation of the dark goddess. So I dove into this book! What I most enjoyed was the in depth exploration of the 'Great Mother' and how she arises shapeshifting into many forms within the consciousness of humanity. I feel like there is so much yet to be explored on this topic and this book really just gives you an introduction to the energy and manifestation of the dark goddess as she emerges in our lives. The authors use dreams as a way to explore how the energy of the dark goddess emerges. It is a little dense to read, but so rich with insight, an invaluable resource on the topic!
  • Marion Woodman is one of the world's great teachers. Sometimes her writing is a little disorganized but she's always very worth reading & listening to.
  • Profound. Gave a few more substantive keys to the mysterious divine. Well written, insightful and full of wisdom. This woman is a sage. Feminine divine.
  • I'm impressed with the context and writings of this book. It really speaks to me. A great read after an all time favorite book "Women who run with the wolves".
  • I have loved every minute of this book. I'm still trying to absorb and identify with the transformational processes described in this book. Woodman does an excellent job of explaining the abstract images the mind provides us in dreams, as a way of understanding our past and our path to transformation and healing. I plan on giving this book to every friend who is ready to dig deep and work on healing the past.

  • Cray spiritual.
